Dream Evil – The Chosen Ones Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it's about the Taiping Rebellion. The song is from the perspective of the Taipings, and the "dragon" refers to the Qing Empire, whose flag bore the image of a Chinese dragon with its face pointed toward the Sun. The heavy religious imagery of the song is due to the fact that Hong Xiuquan, the head of the rebellion, presented himself as the divine brother of Jesus Christ, and part of the Holy Trinity (replacing the Holy Spirit), as well as the "Heavenly King" of the "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom". Therefore, the Hakka people of which Hong was a part, and which comprised the backbone of the rebellion, would have viewed themselves as the "chosen ones" by God. Also worth noting is that Hong believed the Manchus (the race that ruled the Qing dynasty) to be devils that he and the Taipings were destined to slay, hence the repeated imagery of bloodshed and righteous killing in the song.
