Taylor Swift – Holy Ground Lyrics 6 years ago
@[turnstiles:31720] I always thought the dancing part was out of place too. Then I realized the song was about looking back on her relationship with Joe Jonas, and then it made sense. In “Last Kiss,” she says “I’m not much for dancing, but for you I did.” So now she’s referencing here to how she only liked dancing if it was with him.

Sorry, I’m late to the party. lol

She’s looking back on her relationship with Joe Jonas. “Holy Ground” is a reference to his Christian faith, and appropriately so, since there’s not a lot of hints in the song as to who it’s about.

The one hint I pick up on is the dancing. Someone else said the lyrics about dancing didn’t really fit with the song, and I agree. But I think they’re more fitting and relatable when you look back to the saddest breakup song of her earlier years, ever, “Last Kiss,” where she says “I’m not much for dancing, but for you I did.” So here she’s referencing back to how she only liked dancing if it was with him.

Taylor Swift – Begin Again Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the guy from *before* is Jake Gyllenhaal. She’s made it clear in other songs that she felt like he was disparaging in a way, making her feel like she wasn’t (forgive the lack of a better phrase) cool enough, and that he had a habit of cutting her down and making her feel inadequate. So I can see how he’d be the guy who didn’t like it when she wore high heels, didn’t like the music she liked, and never thought she was funny.

She’s obviously taken aback by what a gentleman this new guy is, and how considerate he is, e.g. arriving early, helping her into her chair - “you don’t know how nice that is, but I do”, and walking her to her car.

The line “he always said he didn’t get this song” kinda seals it for me. In “We’re Never Getting Back Together,” she says that he would hole up and listen to some “indie record that’s so much better than mine.” And again with the reference to how this new guy is actually impressed with her taste in music, what with the line about the James Taylor records.

It seems like their breakup impacted her more than any other, and what with all the games she’s implied he played, his refusal to ever let her feel safe in their relationship in a way that she wasn’t worried about him leaving again, his constantly picking fights, etc., can really take a toll. So after such a mess of a relationship, how could she not see love as something that only “break and burn and end.”

Just my thoughts.

The loss of childhood wonder and amazement. Becoming jaded, forgetting to stop and feel.
