Fiona Apple – Never Is a Promise Lyrics 5 years ago
reminds me of the idea that hindsight is 20/20, how the main reason i struggled to get over my first breakup was because i knew something wasn't right about the whole relationship - so much toxicity there, but all disguised so that i couldn't really see it until time had run its due course. it sounds cheesy, but the moment when i finally realised how everything had been was also the moment when i didn't feel the need to tell him at all, where he would've naturally been the one to tell. moments like this are important. the line "I realise what I am now too smart to mention" encapsulates this.

To me, it's a narrative of power dynamic within a relationship, of ridicule and jeers met with a consequential closed attitude from the 'weaker' party. The line "you'll say I need appeasing when I start to cry" hits so hard - I get the sense she's realised the main cause of her crying was this person - maybe I'm projecting though, who knows?

The Hold Steady – First Night Lyrics 6 years ago
I just have so much love for this song and its lyrics. Its portrayal of fizzling out youth, excitement and love is incredible. The lines "and Holly's not invincible, in fact she's in the hospital, not far from that bar where we met on that first night" hit especially hard. It's like how everything seems shiny and perfect at the beginning of things but that 'high' is never ideal because it crashes: "Holly's inconsolable, unhinged and uncontrollable 'cause we can't get as high as we got on that first night." and burns to something irreparable. Though this is talking about addiction, broadly, the idea that something can start off so beautiful that it can only get worse really hits somewhere hard for me.

Mitski – First Love/Late Spring Lyrics 6 years ago
this song is great because it got me into mitski and indie music overall two years ago but now, like 26 months later, it is indeed late spring and I am indeed crying over my first love like a tall child so overall quite relevant

Concrete Blonde – Joey Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is probably most precisely about dating someone with a substance abuse problem, however it resonates on a pretty deep level with any relationship that has bad aspects. Where one person or both people are hurting for some reason, summing up that poignant yet honestly irritating and scary connection with the line "if you're hurting so am I"
When it gets to the verse "but if I seem to be confused, I didn't mean to be with you, and when you said I scared you, well I guess you scared me too." it could easily talk about the trials of being with people where so much anxiety is concerned, and the confusion that comes about as a result of this.
Not gonna lie the fact that it ends with "Joey I'm not angry anymore" really gets me somewhere, how it's really about acceptance and forgiveness - things are messy but that's unavoidable.

Bruce Springsteen – I'm on Fire Lyrics 6 years ago
I saw this tweet once that described this song as being him singing about being 'too horny to live' and honestly this is the interpretation I'm going by from now on.

Galaxie 500 – Tugboat Lyrics 6 years ago
though I presume this song is largely about Sterling Morrison, I do really enjoy thinking about it as a sort of strange romantic song. When I first listened to it I really identified the lyrics with the feeling of falling in love as a very tired introvert, a sort of self-aware, egotistical and crazed yet beautiful feeling of "why would I do anything else? why would I talk to anyone else? when all I want is to be around you and you alone." (or on this case, to 'be your tugboat captain')

Galaxie 500 – Flowers Lyrics 6 years ago
maybe it's just because of particular stuff I was dealing with when I found this song, but it makes me think of trying to love someone who is severely anxious, the "I can never calm you down" and the desperation to help; "I could be inside your dreams." At first this second verse seems like a beautiful devotion, but then when combined with the first and third, it seems more anxious and fervent, not only does the person feel helpless in dealing with the other, but they are also not content with the situation; "buildings have gotta change".

Crowded House – Fall At Your Feet Lyrics 6 years ago
I see this (beautiful) song to be about someone who is openly committing their love to someone who is entirely distanced - not as they don't reciprocate this person's feelings, but perhaps as they are going through a lot of hurt for some reason.

The line 'You're hiding from me now, There's something in the way that you're talking' feels like he is acknowledging the other person's pain, knowing that they aren't entirely present (both in general and in the relationship) as they are in a dark place. He then goes on to say 'But I hear them all moving inside you
Go, I'll be waiting when you call', reinforcing that he is unequivocally there for this person.

Then of course the lines 'whenever I fall at your feet' and 'you let your tears rain down on me' indicate a regularity in this, and that he is always there to comfort the person. To me, it feels like a love song where he is aware that the other isn't able to be 100% in the relationship, but he is willing to let their tears 'rain down on' him just to be with them, in the hope that it will get better.
