Lady GaGa – Shallow Lyrics 6 years ago
*This is a movie song, so look to the movie.

~This song is about two people discovering each other at that moment in their lives, then they feel hopeless, and they begin to move each other. They have both been so afraid (perhaps due to past hurts, loss) to fully bare their souls to each other that they take this risk to bare their souls now.

~He speaks to the shallows--her youthful shallowness, fast-changing existence, the newness of her new-found value the spotlight, and her loneliness:

Tell me somethin', girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?

~… and tells her he has been silent witness to her depth and substance, her secret admirer. He’s falling in love with her. When he feels good, whole, he wants to be swept up in his love for her, sweep her off her feet. When he feels bad, he understands reality. He fears falling too deeply in love with her, disappointing her, hurting very person he has grown to cherish. He has this moment or he is communicating this moment so she feels him. He risks sharing this passion, this love, because once that moment passes, it might be too late… he might be too drunk or too high, and what if he disappoints her before he gets another opportunity to share this with her? And what if she gets swept away in her new-found fame--that shallow--where both of them are standing right now?

I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
Longin' for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

~She speaks to the shallows--his drinking and/or drug use, which he uses to numb himself to his loneliness hidden in a persona and addictions he has cultivated over his career, and until they met, his fading star, and the newness of his return to the spotlight through her:

Tell me something, boy
Aren't you tired tryin' to fill that void?
Or do you need more?
Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?

~… and tells him she has been silent witness to his depth and substance and pain, his secret admirer. She’s falling in love with him. When she feels good, she wants to be swept up in him. When she feels bad, she understands reality. She feels the love, respect, and passion this man has for her, and she fears falling too deeply in love with him, having her young heart broken, losing him to his addictions, or losing him to fame. What if she gets swept away in her new-found fame--that shallow--where both of them are standing right now?

I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
Longing for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

~Neither of them can contain their passion and love any longer. They both know this has nothing to do with reality, but the depth of emotion they feel, feel like burning. They give in and crash all the layers of reality, immersed in this mutual, idealistic, deep passion that feels so perfect “now”--in this moment.

I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now

~… even as reality is pulling at both of them, the impracticality, the consequences of this:

In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We're far from the shallow now

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoah!

~~~Too late~~~
