I think this song is about Sufjan's failing relationship with his partner. He's saying that if he were a different man with a different perspective, he would have been able to read and understand his partner's heart and mind and what they wanted. But now that the relationship is failing he feels lonely. He's not ready to let this relationship go so he's going to put up a fight. He's asking his partner to pick up a battering ram and fight with him to save their relationship. He wants to see that his partner is trying because there's too much love there to give up. So there's too much riding on that fight being won. I think "Maybe I talk too fast, maybe I talk too much" represents the bad communication in the relationship. But the "sensitive laugh" and the "sensitive touch" always made the relationship feel worthwhile and made them forget about their problems. I think "Even if I could have kissed" means that they could have just kissed goodbye and ended it there. And "even if I could be the blind" means they could have just pretended that nothing was wrong and turned a blind eye to their problems. But he decided to fight for their love and he's sorry for the pain he's caused himself and his partner. But there was just too much love to give up. |
