I think it's a song about fear of dying. Robert wishes that life will not end with a infinite black nothingness, instead there will be endless pleasing sleep with angels etc. But actually he concernd this probably will not happen and angels with velvet arms an so on is just an bitter irony. Thus aforementioned lines "if only tonight we could slide Into deep black water and breathe" means a wish that after die you will not cease to exist: "breathing in black waters --> being able to be alife after death". |
