This song is about a relationship going through difficult times. There’s failure on both sides… the singers failure to communicate clearly and the person she’s with who fails to read the non verbal signs. Specially this relationship is about a people pleaser who hasn’t learned to clearly communicate the challenges she’s feeling with her partner and what she needs from him, but expects him to see all the signs, read her mind. And by the time she calls it quits , it’s already too late. Her heart for him is dead. She works hard at making his life easier, better (typical people pleasing behavior), she feels like a solider fighting for their relationship. She’s in pain, and she’s hoping her partner would also see that. But she’s scared to share what she’s feeling because she believes her needs, emotions and thoughts are overwhelming, an imposition. The partner might’ve been super busy with other things to even recognize how she’s looking/feeling (so she doesn’t feel seen). Combine a person who doesn’t communicate clearly, and a person who isn’t paying attention or is ignoring the signs… you get a relationship that is failing snd “ You say, "I don't understand," and I say, "I know you don't"” |

I think this song is about a man trying to appease his lover who happens to be a manipulator.
