My ex boyfriend told me after we broke up this reminded him of me. I ended the relationship and he was very hurt. I used to love it . now when I hear it I’m reminded of how heartless I was and how I led him on even though I knew it was never going to be what I wanted like he did. he deserved a lot better than me at the time .
When he says you had to know that I was fond of you, it brings up the memory of how much I knew he loved me and I should have ended it much sooner than I did with no false hope after. |

I think it’s about a lost relationship where the “you“ in the song is her. Sometimes after years in a marriage or relationship you find it hard to say words like sorry or I love you because of situations that have happened in the past even though you know if you just communicated with that person they still might be yours. You blame yourself because if only. Hardest of all would be could you hold me tonight? Instead of it being something that proves your vulnerability and love for that person you stay silent and when they’re gone you wish you said anything and maybe you still be with that person who you loved and probably still love so much. It’s just my interpretation and it’s because I can relate to this so much that when I heard it again after years it brought me to tears. I love this song. Definitely one of if not her best . |

It’s about an unrequited ,deep ( maybe it’s someone he can’t love because they are the love of someone he cares about very much) love and the fact that he doesn’t know how or can’t tell her for some important reason . He says I need to know you and whoever he has been with in the past has never been able to replace her in his head ,even when he is walking with them. |
