@[kosalp:31870] - are you so sure? "Calm as cookies and cream, so it seems We're not buying your dubious state of serenity Acting all surprised when you're caught in the lie" This is more the FACADE of being in control, when in fact you are not. Agreed, that Trump is just one example that this song might be referencing. |

| Tool – Culling Voices Lyrics | 6 years ago |

A few different ideas ... I haven't decided yet :) 1. Far-left, far-right partisan politics and society norms - "culling voices" to remove or eliminate dissent; assuming without questioning. Not being open or willing to listen to the opposing viewpoints. Our society is no longer willing to find a middle ground and everything is 100% polarising... Are you FOR or AGAINST climate change? Are you FOR or AGAINST Trump as President? 2. Our "filtered" view of the world on Facebook and social media - we stay in silos based on filtered information that feeds our "confirmation bias". We don't look for alternative points of view and actively discard things that don't fit with our world view. This makes it impossible for our point-of-view to be fully "challenged" (because that is uncomfortable for us). 3. Rape (or other falsified) allegations - in MJK's case, falsely accused and lambasted immediately by an "anonymous" Twitter user, with fairly minimal evidence of the claims made, followed by calls for your music (or your privileges as a normal and equal member of society) to be disowned, segregated and barred by those who are abhorrent at how you as a privileged, white male "have treated a woman" through your position of power. This is the new social media landscape that we have, where anyone can make an accusation that is unproven and then different "tribes" will form around strongly-held viewpoints. 4. Shutting down arguments based on these strongly-held viewpoints. For example, "gas-lighters" who say anything or do anything to convince you that you are wrong, even blatantly lying or misleading you and making you feel like it's always your fault. This has some similarities to "7empest" later in the album. Psychopaths are people who do not consider the feelings or needs others, often lacking empathy. "Don't you dare point that at me" is a cry out to those that falsely accuse or falsely label others: a. You're assumed to fit into a particular "identity group" without considering the individual's own traits. We are labelled by others into belonging to a specific viewpoint. b. The Psychopath has not considered the impact that these "false allegations" might have on the individual targeted. For example, Kevin Spacey lost the lead role on House of Cards and other films / shows - he was not treated as "innocent until proven guilty". These individuals are forever tarnished irrespective of whether they are guilty or not. The initial allegation gets all the limelight in the media, but when the case is dropped, nobody hears anything much about it. |

| Art of Fighting – Real Time Lyrics | 6 years ago |

This song to me is about being memories being burned into our mind, and living through the pain of loss... "So many nights have passed me now Those giddy lights they chased me down All frozen time Is melted in an early sun Does anybody know me now? Did anybody notice how? Always leaving at an early hour 'Yeah, take good care, I'll see you around' 'Oh hey, hi' " Is the protagonist drinking themselves to oblivion every night? Just wanting to be noticed, but having nothing more than cursory conversations with the regulars and bar staff? "All of my electric memories Spread across my head like some hot disease Every single thing that I said to you Every little thing that I tried to do Not on one thing does this life depend So tonight I'm gonna see where this darkness ends" The memories are painful and swimming around in their head, so they'll continue to drink themselves stupid to push through the pain. "see where the darkness ends" is taking it to the extreme in a spiral of self-destruction. "'Cause I'm drowning in unforeseen circumstances Drowning in unforeseen circumstances In real time" They are experiencing the pain and anguish in real time, but also living in real time... second by second as the clock ticks away. |

| Art of Fighting – In the Free Blue Lyrics | 6 years ago |

This song to me is about making the hard choice to leave, perhaps because you've messed it up totally or because it's the right thing to do for your partner or yourself. You've laid down next to your partner for the last time before you accept it and leave out the door. "And I leave with the night cause it's all I have left to do You've gotta bury your heart to recover your soul, it's true" Also there some additional lyrics here... "You've gotta bury your heart to recover my soul from you" |

| Art of Fighting – Less Than an Instant Lyrics | 6 years ago |

This song to me is about rekindling a old love that has become stagnant, or starting a new one... capturing the moment on the dance floor, and hoping for some new excitement, joy or romance to emanate. "Gonna see the morning rise Swallow the light of the moon But stay with me and sway a while Daylight won't be here anytime soon" He wants to stay out all night, until the early morning... capture and live in the moment. "Put a little rhythm into it Put a little back in the step Anything to put you under a spell 'Cause I know that I'm not there yet" He wants to make his partner happy, excited and enthusiastic in the moment. However, it's building slowly and he knows it takes time to warm up. "I've been a lot of things in my time But I've never been a fool, no If tonight you're gonna make me one Just let me know it soon, oh soon" He's putting himself out there, but is still afraid of being made the fool. He would rather know sooner rather than later if that's the case. "And I could hear your heart calling out Beating for something new" He knows his partner wants love and connection, something new... "You think that you know what you've got But in less than an instant it's gone" ... and yet it can all end in the smallest instant. Pop! And it's completely gone... To me, this song is also about appreciating what you currently have, even when you feel like it has faded... |

| Art of Fighting – Ride After Ride Lyrics | 6 years ago |

This to me is a song about jealousy... being a new parent, or being held back, while your friends are off jet-setting and exploring the world. Peggy was a new mother at the time when this was recorded. "And in your eyes I caught The actual fire of just what living could be And that’s gone from me" She sees the passion and excitement in her adventurous friend, and realises that passion has left her. "And so what riches lay Out there where you went to where I never could go? 'Cause my holes might show" She was shy and introverted, afraid to show her true self if she were to truly let go. "And I still think of you In my mind I watch you catching ride after ride It all opened wide" Her friend caught one break after another (in her mind) and life became much better. "I’m watching from back here I’m so glad you got clear" I think she accepts it though... she knows she's chosen a different path... one where she will be left behind in a quiet and simple existence. |
