This song gets at some principles of rastafarianism and ironically reminds me of The Matrix movie, which echoes the sentiment of these lyrics. My take: media companies are busy repackaging the same trashy Fast and Furious movies and “reality TV” and the impact of it on our society is mind numbing...much like how the Matrix hypnotized people and allowed them to “live” in an illusion of a comfortable reality. If our Babylonian society can hook children on this diet of junk entertainment (stale popcorn) it can train them to buy the culture, aspire toward wealth and consumption, and care more about the projected “successful” capitalist lifestyle where you spend all your time working for some idea of “the good life” meanwhile sacrificing life and health to corporations you work for. HR is saying he has refused to “trade his mind” and instead has freed his mind “I'm not in your movie”. And he is imploring the kids to make that choice...to choose real life (take the blue pill). |

| @[anderspa:30795] thanks so much for the explanation. I always admired the music in this song but only years later am I reading the (interpretable) lyrics. It describes true heroism, the kind that never gets celebrated. True he's bragging... but he's bragging about being the person who never gets to brag about his job to parents and socialites, because he was too proud to keep his mouth shut. I take him at his word that he had opportunities to "clean up his act" and get paid well to make sanitized music for angry kids. I have a corporate job in finance and sometimes I think it's too much for me but somehow I manage to keep being a good German. | |
