People are so pessimistic! The only segment of the lyrics in wich the author makes a negative judgment is the word "dislike". And I woudn't have such a shallow interpretation of what 'mirror" and "reflection" are - arguing that's about image. This was writen in 1977, by a german; it's not a 2019 pop song. The delay and reverb effects evoke an introspective atmosphere and, in addition to that, the minor tonality (E minor) too. Also the cadence/pulse of the song corroborates this thought. The greatest star: someone notable by its power, influence, talent; A young man: someone that's not experienced in life and have doubts; The mirror: the process of thinking about himself; The reflection: the "content" of what he discovered about himself; And, finally, the Hall of mirrors: all of the opinions and critics of others, what other people think about him OR the vast range of personalities he discovered about himself, what he can/could/will be, his inclinations, pursued or abandoned in the entire process of what made him a greatest star. (precarious grammar = not my first language, sorry) |
