A song about war, division. The title was likely lifted from psychiatrist RD Laing's best selling book at the time, "The Politics Of Experience". The " short, sharp, shock" is likely a reference to shock treatment, and it's no coincidence that the song "Brain Damage" soon follows on the album. |

Life in a mental hospital when people were still being treated like animals (though RD Laing helped change all of that).
Diamonds and clubs: people in mental hospitals often pass the time playing cards.
Mild the reflecting electricity eyes is the look of people after shock treatment
Light misted fog: the fog of being heavily medicated or shocked and so on. |

One of his best, and Waters must have thought so as "Pigs On The Wing" borrows a lot from "Feel". |

@[buriedinmyskin:38731] Yes, and Syd frequently wrote of animals. I've always heard, "the crab on it's side she struggled a bridge by the water". Sad. |

@[terii:37944] Some people just have low musical IQs. Sadly, they have taken over popular music today. |

@[richardb2f:37943] Clever, yes. Random, no. The brilliant guitar intro? Gilmour thought it would make a good intro. Brilliant. Perhaps "anyone can play it" but that is true of "Wish You Were Here" And other Floyd classics. It's the musicality and expression that counts, no? |

One can assume that Keith Reid experienced what has been referred to b some as "Cosmic Consciousness", or, the experience of being one with god/universe. There are hints of this in other lyrics, notably "In Held T'was In I".
In a comprehensive study ("Cosmic Consciousness") the researcher noted that the person who has experienced it often falls into depression. It is almost always a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a life-changing experience. |

@[Evilcw54:33458] The depression that follows the experience known as "Cosmic Consciousness", or, Satori, or other types of mystical/religious experiences that involve merging with god/universe. Although fairly rare, these experiences could be initiated with help from certain substances throughout history. The experience seldomly returns to those who have gone through it, hence the depressed thoughts. However, most people are forever changed due to the experience in various positive ways. These changes are also usually perceived by others as well. The most comprehensive study ever published on the subject is the book, "Cosmic Consciousness".

@[JoeC0518:30743] I only saw Yes in 1971 on Thanksgiving night, opening for King Crimson and Procol Harem. A spiritual experience among many in the time period you referenced. I've discussed that time period with certain people in my life in almost your exact words. |
