I think it’s about rushing into a marriage and then eventually divorcing your partner due to not loving them anymore “for reasons unknown” “I pack my case”-moving out of his partner’s house “I check my face,I look a little bit older”-he’s lost time from where he’s been in the marriage “With one deep breath and one big step”-they took big steps to get married “I move a little bit closer”-I think he means closer to death, but i’m honesty not too sure. It could also mean that he’s a little bit closer to his old life, before he rushed into marriage. “I caught my stride”-he’s regaining his identity before he rushed into marriage Tbh I thought the line after was “I flew in blind” and I was going to say that he flew in blindly to marriage. So I’m not too sure what “I flew and flied” means. Maybe it means how time flew by “I know if destiny’s kind,I got the rest on my mind” I think “destiny” isn’t referring to God. He’s basically wondering if God will forgive him for divorcing. Having the rest on his mind means having a plan after the divorce. “It was an open chair We sat down in, the open chair” -I think this is then getting married. The “open chair” meaning that it was easy getting married so they just thought “fuck it ,let’s get married” “I said if destiny is kind, I got the rest on my mind”-“destiny” being God. He’s wondering if God will forgive him for treating marriage like it’s no big deal. Having the rest on his mind means having a plan for how the marriage is going to go |

I think people here have some really interesting thoughts on the song. Mine aren’t as good ,but I thought I’d share them anyway I think the song is about a lesbian relationship I think this because some people think that God forbids gay marriage (so that would be “hell”) but at the same time, it’s believed that people in love should get married (which is “heaven”) and the “crossfire” is the moral grey area of them getting married or not “You’re keeping secrets on your pillow” the secret being the girlfriend, because they have to hide their relationship due to it being socially unacceptable. “Let me inside, no cause for alarm I promise tonight not to do no harm” Her pleading for her to let her inside suggests that she wouldn’t originally let her inside probably because she gave into peer pressure. “Harm” probably means not telling anyone about going over to her place and not “harming” her reputation. “And we’re caught in the crossfire Of heaven and hell And we’re searching for shelter Lay your body down Lay your body down Lay your body down” I discussed earlier about how I thought “hell” was gay marriage being socially unacceptable and how “heaven” was about how their love is supposed to be shared with the world and the “crossfire” is the morally grey area that they’re caught in. All they can do is hide and search for “shelter” as the trial of if gay marriage is allowed goes on “Watching your dress as you turn down the light I forget all about the storm outside Dark clouds roll their way over town Heartache and pain came pouring down” “Dress” is the reason I think they’re female btw. But I think they’re getting ready for sex in this part, or at least engaging in some kind of romantic event “The storm outside” being the protest against gay people getting married “The dark clouds” are the protesters “Heartache and pain” are likely tears “thy came pouring down” because they were somehow caught together and are probably being separated from each other “Tell the devil that he can go back from where he came His fiery arrows drew the beed in vein And when the hardest part is over we’ll be here And our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears” The trial is over in this verse and it turns out that gay marriage is allowed. So them getting people to “tell the devil that he can go back from where he came” is them responding to people who still say that gay marriage is wrong. They’re basically saying that the argument isn’t valid anymore. “Fiery arrows” are likely last ditch efforts to stop gay marriage, such as people saying that being gay is a disability “The hardest part” is likely actually getting married with everyone disapproving of it And their “dreams” are things like growing old together and getting a house together. “Lay your body down Next to mine” The use of “next to mine” suggests that they’re now happy together. Or it could mean that they want to die together. |

I know I’m very late but I think this song is about getting into a (abusive) relationship “Neon tiger” meaning that your partner will show you off to their friends and family. Because neon tigers are shown off in Las Vegas “They promised just to pet you,but don’t let them get you” I think “getting” you means sharing all your secrets and being completely open with your partner “Under the heat of the south west sun” I’m not too sure about this one. I think the “heat” is the feeling of love “Took to the spotlight like a diamond ring” I mean,come on “Strategise to maim you,but don’t let them tame you” I think “maiming” means your partner saying and doing things to degrade you. And “taming” means setting aside your ambitions and dreams and basically just letting your partner make all your decisions for you. “I don’t wanna be kept,I don’t wanna be caged,I don’t wanna be damned oh hell,I don’t wanna be broke,I don’t wanna be saved,I don’t wanna be SOL” I think this is about wanting to escape the relationship,but at the same time being too scared to leave the relationship “Run neon tiger there’s a price on your head” I think this is breaking up and having to avoid your ex’s friends and family otherwise “they’ll hunt you down and gut you” “Oh I’m going to need a neon tiger roar” I think this is about regaining your identity after you break up with your partner |
