| Natalie Merchant – Thick As Thieves Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| When I hear this song I hear it as a presentation of what a shame abortion in society is. I\'m not saying its a Pro-Life mantra or anything. Its just stating what a shame it is that leads to a decision of abortion. I admit, its my own interpretation. I wonder if Natalie had a specific topic in mind when she wrote this. Its one of my favorite songs of hers. In my opinion the song\'s first verse is an acknowledgement that sin is in the world, the deep and black culdesac is the remnants of formerly occupied womb. The wicked king of parenting is abortion itself. His voice softens after the act is done but he\'ll come right back due to our continued bad decisions. We know no future, we don\'t remember the past, stuck in a cycle. That\'s how I read it. Until Natalie Merchant herself tells me otherwise that\'s the only way to interpret this song. I\'d love for her to tell me otherwise. She\'s GENIOUS! | |

When I hear this song it sounds like its about a guy regretting a break up with a girl. From the other replies it could be about suicide. But I like to imagine another possibility. With a shift in perspective this sounds a whole lot to me like the lamenting that Judas Iscariot would have done after turning in Christ to be crucified. The whole song can be imagined this way but the lyric that locks that in for me is "You're the path I could not follow To the place where no one cries" Judas was unable to follow Christ to heaven. I'd love to run this by the band and hear what they think. |
