| Paul Simon – 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover Lyrics | 3 years ago |
This is about a man, let's call him Paul, being seduced by a femme fatale. She feels attracted to him and realises that he is not happy in his current relationship so sees an opportunity. She pretends to be his friend, trying to help, but simply wants him for herself. Probably just for a short time. "I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued". The first interpretation that comes to mind, for both Paul and the listener of the song, is that one should not think she means badly to interfere. Actually she hopes that he does not think she is only helping him, but understands that she wants him. In the verses she talks like a warm and empathic person who cares for Paul. In the chorus however she shows her true nature. If she was really a good person, she would also consider his lovers feelings. Instead her advise is simply to dump her. Paul is a weak character, all too willing to be persuaded, showing interest in the 50 ways. "And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right". He is won over not by her reasoning but by her kiss. The different names in the chorus show her to be really a maneater. She has been saying things like this to lots of men. So it actually IS her habit to intrude. There is not only contrast between the verse and chorus in the lyrics, but also in the melody. It changes from soft and sad to frivolous. These contrasts and the hypocrisy in her words says make this song so funny! |

| Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – Andy's Babies Lyrics | 4 years ago |
"Andy" has to be Andy Warhol. The most obvious clue is 'Perfect day' and 'White light, white heat' which are Lou Reed songs. Lou Reed as part of the Velvet Underground was supported by Andy Warhol. Lou Reed called him their protector in an interview, a video of which can be found on the internet, because Andy enabled them to do whatever they wanted, protecting them from commercial pressure. Andy Warhol supported not only them, but many other artists, So he had many "babies". Lou Reed was not a kind person, so that is probably the basis for the first verse. I have no idea who Trudy and Donald may be. |
