I think this song is a metaphor to people who are in addiction rehab centers who live off Tisbury lane. Starting with the first line “she greets the day with her hair wet” is a sign that she is in some sort of structured environment that has a set schedule for her to take a shower. However, it is also a euphemism, as she is approaching this routine with belief she is going to do something that she wants to do and is her decision that now they have to follow. Coinciding with the following line “she asked them to vacate the building.” These two lines, sets the premise that she is doing what they routinely ask her to do but in a more positive way since she is planning on then doing something that requires them to listen to her, now set demands. However, her plan is metaphoric. She wants to use again but she knows if she uses again, her tolerance might be too high for them to treat her if she ODs. And then there will be no one for her to see (in general, and especially those who visit her). Which makes me also believe she is in a drug rehab psychiatric center. Moreover, she has been dealing with PTSD of a traumatic event she dealt with silently as a child, but her family knew about. Preluding to the next beginning set of lyrics. God knows she’s trying because the hand God dealt her was more difficult than others. She deals with it by using drugs. She had confided in Mae’s lead singer about her situation and he helps her realize God forgives her for using drugs to cope with the hand she was dealt. This then leads into the next line about her family who has been “watching her with eyes closed”. Whoever abused her, was one they did not want to admit to. Therefore, they had knowledge abuse was happening but didn’t do anything about it because of the repercussions. They were cowardly. They knew she was using and understood why she would. No one stood up or tried to help her, she fell to drugs as an outlet of support. Because of this, they accepted it as an excuse to live with her post traumatic stress. By saying “she’s always stuck in the old route” insinuates two things; one she is stuck in her past since she has never sought therapy to deal with her problems, and two she has chose drugs to numb her pain. No one has “knocked” her walls down to the underlying meaning of her drug habit. They have only used that as an outer-laying excuse for her addictive behavior. Neglecting her trauma altogether. When she is finally introduced to someone who perhaps understands and connects with her level of pain that no one else has, she is nervous (said person) is going to leave. She understands everyone else has given up on her but she hopes he doesn’t because she has finally identified herself as being an addict and that’s “part of the problem”. He has helped her realized that. Could she let go of what happened to her? If she could, there is hopes she could let go of her drug problem. However, one comes before the other. And all of that seems like a miracle. He wants only the best for her. To overcome everything and see herself the way he sees her. Which may additionally take another miracle. No one can know how she feels because everyone perceives and deals with trauma differently. Although he tries to relate, he realizes it’s impossible to fully understand. She is tired of explaining her drug habit to people who should understand why she has one - hence she won’t use the phone. She’s using again but starts going back to NA/AA to learn how other people deal with their addictions triggered by trauma “she sits in the classroom..” He is her only credible sense of support. She chose him to be her friend, which begs the argument of Plato’s philosophy of “friends are more important than family” since you chose to be friends with someone yet you do not chose your family. He is obviously not an addict and doesn’t understand the complexity of giving up drugs when he is there to be “her drug”. Hence the line “please don’t give up when it’s easy.” Unfortunately, we take it personally when we aren’t enough to be the persons outlet when it comes to drugs. He implements Jesus as a symbol, since most people who feel “lost” or “without a family” use religion for moral and ethical code. Religion is especially popular in helping addicts. He is using Jesus as a form of self fulfillment, by stating “He's the only one that will be constantly everything you need”. Aka - let Jesus be your judge and support if I can’t be. Unfortunately, the next lines prelude the idea that she keeps repeating her actions, as most drug addicts do. She just needs the now not the future which is why the chorus is “do do do do..” he’s trying to go through the motions with her so she doesn’t feel alone, but he knows there’s a hierarchy that is beyond him that needs to take over in order for her to fully recover. She is held at a drug rehab psychiatric facility off Tisbury lane. |
