| If I'm not mistaken, I believe this is pretty simple. The songwriter is a musician. The other arts/interests such as fine art, vintage wine, designer clothes, poetry are of little to no interest, as he is a musician/singer. That's what has him grinning inside like a thousand Cheshire cats. He is content with his art of music. After the second time he sings, "Yeah, my bird performs...there she goes", a synth, I believe, plays a high pitched melodic sequence like the chirping melody of a bird. It's a form of word painting in music. It's really a direct analogy of him singing us the song we are listening to. "The cage is open but she's no desire to fly", means he is pleased with staying in his profession and singing/performing for people. "You keep saying what you got", is a reference to him continuing to write music, play bass, sing and perform. Lastly, as the trumpet becomes more prominent toward the latter part of the song, it not only reflects the "bird" singing but also gives us a very triumphant feeling that the songwriter/musician/singer, Colin Moulding, undoubtedly feels success with what he has and will continue to accomplish with music. | |
