Type O Negative – Kill All The White People Lyrics 9 months ago
@[Rabster:47737] Bruh, I know you’re a dogwhistling guy from 2007, but the Egyptian rulers (the ones who used slaves to build said pyramids) were Berbers, not Arabs. Also, the Arab Conquest of Egypt didn’t begin until late-5th century CE (post-pyramid building).
Egypt, to this very day, isn’t even ethnically Arab — that’s called pan-Arabism. Egyptians have long been primarily a mix of Berbers, Arabs, Turks, countless other tribes/ethnic groups that populated North Africa, Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa before the Greco-Romans, Ottomans, Persians, and Arabs took turns doing imperialism; which by definition is the whitewashing of identity (and religion) into one central identity defined by the ruling empire. Some later empires (i.e. Persian & Ottoman) realized allowing multi-culturalism in their colonies often resulted in genuine loyalty from the natives of annexed land… which came in handy when needing soldiers to defend against the never-ending empires who still fight over this very land to this day.

Berbers, especially the Rulers & aristocrats, heavily mixed with Romans, Greeks, Turks, and other high-society individuals from a myriad of modern-day European countries, etc; which made them quite light-skinned. Likewise, Southern-European countries, plus France, Spain, and the Balkans; have long had large Berber populations (many pre-dating those who’d come to claim themselves the indigenous of these lands, along with several other ethnic groups), and many citizens of those countries today have quite a bit of Berber in ‘em.

If we get into defining an Arab, which thanks to modern-day pan-Arab movements, includes many many ethnicities — with many having even lighter-skinned than you. However, ethnic Arabs are from Saudi Arabia/Arabian Peninsula.

During repeated enslavements of the Jews and certain black sub-Saharan Africans (not all, because several African Kingdoms were highly respected by the Pharaohs & welcomed into their royal court for trade & military alliances) that built the pyramids in Ancient Egypt, the Pharaohs (aka Berber Kings) were literally in-bed with the Romans. Cleopatra was Roman. When the Roman Empire conquered Israel after winning the 3rd Jewish-Roman War (they lost the first 2 wars to the underdogs — the Jewish Maccabees), they sold most of the Jews into slavery in Egypt, while forcing the rest into the very first walled Jewish ghetto, which the Romans named “Judea” (a province inside Byzantine Israel).
So, at every turn — there were Romans, Greeks, and other assorted mostly white Europeans participating in slavery conducted under the Berbers & Arabs, and of course, under themselves in their own colonies.
And soon enough, the British would make themselves the new “Roman Empire,” but by “secretly” working with the Arabs in their proxy conquests — something they’d repeat in WWI to takedown the Ottoman Empire in the East, so the British could colonize both Egypt & Israel a’la Sykes-Picos following WWI). The same Brits who’d work with the new Arab-Berber regime ruling Egypt and other North African countries that participated in the black African slave trade at home, and eventually abroad — known as the Transatlantic slave trade.

History’s complicated! Why’d ya have to go and bring it up in a forum meant to ascribe clearer meaning to song lyrics? Because both you and @[xscorpio303x:47738] had to butcher history, I had to come & correct both of y’all. Nowhere in the song does Pete mention slavery… and yet here we are. Because of racist rewrites of history to victim-blame the enslaved, while also denying the non-black slaves. Did you know the Irish were very briefly slaves right along with black Africans in British colonized North America?? The slave owners were beyond outnumbered, making them scared their slaves were gonna unite and slit their throats in the night… so they levered whiteness to sow division — something the Irish eventually leveraged until they not only weren’t slaves or indentured servants anymore, but until they were fully recognized as “whites” with all the same rights as the WASPs. Italians were never slaves, but they similarity leveraged their skin color & adoption of extremely racist views to attain whiteness in this country. This history is something Europeans can’t possibly understand about America. Hell, barely any Americans are even taught about it! Clearly.
Ever wonder why all the cops are Irish & Italian in the East Coast and Midwest??
Whiteness.
That’s how they gained societal acceptance despite importing European Catholicism… a very unpopular move.

So, of course, Peter Steele, a Polish-Irish Catholic from a predominantly Jewish & Catholic working-class/working-poor burrough in Brooklyn, was raised by a very Conservative family that harbored just as much prejudice as it did shame for sex (see: Catholic “kink” meaning behind the song “Christian Woman”). Pete, luckily, grew-up with Josh Silver (Type O Negative’s Keyboardist, eventual label owner, and frequent co-Producer w/ Steele) in the same neighborhood as his best friend. Josh, in case you forgot, is Jewish. Peter’s best friend, co-writer, and Type O Neg co-founder. Whatever happened with Carnivore while Pete was on Anal Blast records with all the death metal douches, was long left in the past. That was Pete’s upbringing, and well, the environment at that label. In later interviews, he even denounces Type O’s first album as something he regrets, admitting it was just “left over Carnivore songs.”
Pete overcame his family’s ways — which is more than I can say for 80% of the commenters here.

If you’re racist and you listen to Type O Negative, the joke’s quite literally on you. See this verse from “We Hate Everyone”:

Labeled racist

@[tuesday22:31590] Corner's report says Layne did not die from drug related causes. It's posted online, go read it. Mike Starr was more than the bass player on the first 2 albums, he wrote all the bass for the first 3, Inez barely did shit creatively. I agree with the OP, Rest in Peace Jerry Cantrell you're as good as dead to those who really love Layne, Mike Starr, Sean, and AIC. The esoteric music video for this song shows Layne replacing the dying man. The lyrics in this single were written by Jerry, and together with the music video, really seems like he's planning Layne's funeral, getting him out of his way.

@[GranoblasticMan:31481] Yes! Brilliant catch. Many take this song at face value as a literal "solute" to serial killers, but again, people don't realize Andy's not American. The American media turns serial killers into literal celebrities, and "God Bless" has been reduced to nothing more than patriotic rhetoric.

Leonard Cohen – You Want It Darker Lyrics 5 years ago
@[hln:30134] Leonard Cohen was Jewish lol. Christianity took a lot from the Jewish Religion (the entire Talmud, although it was scrubbed quite a bit before being renamed the "Old Testament"), and this is clearly still the cause for a lot of confusion, but Cohen never left any room for confusion when it came to his Religion. Why don't you Google him a bit before proclaiming yet another one of his songs belongs to the Christians ("Hallelujah" being grossly reappropriated from his intended meaning as well).

Until his death Cohen adamantly corrected every journalist that assumed he was a "secular Jew," due to his openly nihilistic perspective, making it perfectly clear he was Jewish by both ethnicity and religious practice. He was raised Orthodox Jewish, and naturally progressed to a more liberal form of Judiasm. The modern Jewish relationship with God is a little more complex than just the blind Faith and black & white ideals found in Christianity.
I appreciate Cohen for not being afraid, and taking the easy route in his career my minimizing his religion or publicly denying it, just to avoid the stereotypes and harassment that often accompany being outted as Jewish. Many famous musicians shy away from these questions, or flat out refuse to go there, and it only perpetuates feelings of fear and shame to their Jewish listeners or fans, demonstrating that letting others know you're Jewish isn't a good idea. It's a risk, one that Cohen was able to take because he was a nihilist and didn't fear death. What he feared most was life, because life is suffering, and he shared his truth with anyone who cared to listen, but he ultimately wrote his poetry/lyrics as simple creative catharsis for himself.

@[ken1025751:30133] Leonard Cohen was Jewish and he's absolutely referencing the Holocaust. He was very "concerned" with Judiasm and felt the need to repeatedly have to clarify this in interviews throughout his life, where journalists kept assuming he was a "secular Jew," or not practicing. He was raised Orthodox Jewish, later embrassing a more liberal form of Judiasm, and despite his interest in learning about other religions (which any tolerant person would surely benefit from doing), he always made it clear he was Jewish in both ethnicity and religious practice. As an American Jew you have to learn of Christianity since it's imbedded in American government and society, Cohen took it a step further and wanted to learn more about their beliefs, along with Islam, Buddhism, and other religions he found fascinating.

It's hard for non-jews to understand the cognitive dissonance of having your people targeted in the genocide of the Holocaust, such an unconscionable inhumane act on its own, let alone knowing our God allowed it to happen, or at a minimum was complicit by doing absolutely nothing. It's the exact opposite of the "lullaby for suffering" (The Mourner's Kadish, or arguably Jewish Prayers in general, which are prodominantely focused on historical suffering, and almost always in the form of song), "And a paradox to blame," (the far-fetched stories in the Torah, always telling of God's mercy in the end - granting a miracle to save the characters that did't lose hope, despite the insane odds and literal impossibility of survival, and whom didn't turn their backs on God, or change allegiance to another God/idol), ending with "But it's written in the scriptures, And it's not some idle claim," (literal reference to the Torah, stating the aforementioned is in writing and therefore indisputable).

This is why a lot of modern Jews struggle with their view of God; neither being able to fully believe or disbelieve in Him.
There's also another blatent reference to the Jewish genocide, besides the millions of candles reference: "They're lining up the prisoners, and gaurds are taking aim. I struggled with some demons, they were middle-class and tame. I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim." This is a darkly sarcastic statement about the hypocrisy in God's teachings, since so many people were free to murder and maim the Jews, without any recourse, while the peaceful and observant were the targets left lying in wait, despite already stomaching a lifetime of suffering without snapping into violent acts of retribution.
