He Is We – All About Us Lyrics 6 years ago
This is a favourite song of mine, and has been since I was about 12 (I'm 19 now).

So for me I've listened to this through my teenage years. So unlike many songs which I listened to a lot for a short period of time, I've listened to it relatively regularly throughout the years. Therefore this song is unique to me as instead of reminding me of a single period of time or instance, rather it brings up various memories, and therefore mixed feelings whenever I hear it.

When I first discovered the song, I was also reading a particular book, Gone by Michael Grant if anyone knows that. I would listen to this song on repeat whilst reading or around the time I read it. I then always associated (slight) romantic interests in the book with this song, even though it didn't necessarily fit the story.

Then several years later, I made a really close friend and with them rediscovered my love for Owl City, and thus along with it this song. So the song also reminds me of my life around that time and my close friendship with this friend who I have since lost contact with.

Then when I got my first boyfriend, I remember showing him this song (and being nervous to do so - introducing songs that mean a lot to people who mean a lot is more daunting and nerve-racking than one would think). It doesn't so much remind me of that first relationship but it does carry that high-school sweetheart vibe for me.

Now, my interpretation has never really matched the music video, despite that, I still think that it tells a beautiful story. I've always taken the song very literally and seen a very prom-like setting (as others have according to previous comments) where the girl asks the guy to dance with and because he's shy/nervous reassures him and offers to take the lead. Once they're dancing it all comes naturally and the love been them becomes apparent and takes over, the spotlight follows them around the room as they dance (a little like the scene in Enchanted with Giselle and Robert if you know this).

But recently I've entered into a new relationship and it's brought to my attention a new possible interpretation that's a little less literal. I see it as a big metaphor of about overcoming that terrifying feeling when entering a new relationship.

The start, she's reassuring him that it's okay because they're in this together, and she 'won't let [him] fall down', that '[he] can step on [her] feet' as in she knows they'll make mistakes and have a bump every now and then and that it won't be perfect. 'Give it a try', she asks him to give a relationship/her a chance.

Then they have to be open about their relationship to friends/family etc, 'the room's hush-hush and now's our moment', 'eyes on you, eyes on me'...though it's scary it's okay because they're 'doing this right'.

Then the chorus is where they realise no matter what everyone else thinks, ultimately how they feel is most important. 'Lovers dance when they feel in love', so when people love each other they come together and accomplish life as a team. The world falls away when they're dancing (or just together in this relationship), with them feeling so in-love ('spotlight shinin', it's all about us', 'this is a feeling I've never felt').

After the chorus the guy is feeling more confident in this relationship 'feeling brave' and it's just more about him being in-love and glad they started dancing together (ie. gave the relationship a go). He wants to 'dance real slow', so he's happy and wants to savour every moment he has with her.

Then the chorus comes back and everything repeats. Just my interpretation of what is to me at least, a truly timeless song.
