I don't think it's referring to getting high on weed, it's definitely taking acid, i.e. "Shades of green". Bridge of sighs could be crossing over from being sober to tripping and not an actual physical bridge. The line It's all too Beautiful is definitely an acid trip. "Feed the ducks with a bun" I believe is actually feeding the ducks, not so much a metaphor. But then again, you never know. I've taken acid once and I don't think I could feed any ducks, maybe look at them, that's it. |

This song is in my Top 10 list of favorite TP songs. The lyrics are so powerful & moving. It's my favorite duet between Tom & Stevie. Tom wrote Insider for Stevie but he liked it so much he told her he couldn't give it to her so he wrote Stop Draggin' My Heart Around for her which became a big hit. Personally, I think Insider is such a better song. The lyrics are just mind blowing. Anyone that has been in a relationship knows exactly what the line "I've been burned by the fire" means but he's way of referring to having your heart broken is so much more powerful and conveys the feeling so much poetically better. I will never understand how one person could write so many great lyrics like Tom did. It was truly a gift and this song is just unbelievable. |

It is not a song about suicide which Tom has been quoted many times that it has nothing to do with suicide. 441 refers to Highway 441 that runs through his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. In some ways I think he's actually the American Girl because he was looking to get out of a small city like Gainesville and go on to a bigger music scene but believe it or not Gainesville in the 70's was overflowing with musicians that went on to be very famous. I think it's simply about a girl's relationship with someone in her past and her discontentment with her life and knowing there is much more out there for her. I miss TP. |
