I think this song is about being caught up in the system when you're just completely fed up wih it and life, Yet you still have to pretend ti enjoy it. He talks about his depression (now I can't climb the stairs, prozac painkillers) in the verses, which are lower and softer (representing a low point or his inner thoughts). But in the chorus, the song explodes with pretend happiness (what he shows to the rest of the world), whilst he tells us "you've got to feel it in your bones" meaning he has to keep going and pretend to enjoy it. I think the lyrics are also intentionally vague and hard to make out because it is Thom obscuring his inner thoughts from what he is trying to escape from. |

Well I think this is about ignorance to world issues. "Plastic bag, middle class, etc." "There is no significant risk to your health" I guess it fits in with OK computer's theme of looking back from a horrible future and realising why did no one do anything. |

This song was written quite early on in their career, at a time when they weren't even known throughout Manchester. This song shows Ian and the rest of the band's need for their music to be accepted and get out of their present situation. I think it's about wanting something much greater than what you currently have. For instance, "I don't have to sell my soul", about how people might try and change themselves (change their soul) to try and achieve this vision. |
