I think this song is about grieving the loss of an affair while at the same time grieving the loss of his wife who is the woman he has loved the longest and deepest. Swimming in the same deep water as you is hard - his wife's expectations are that they stay committed in a deep relationship but as hard as he tries, he falls into shallow relationships. He tries to be faithful but the pressure and temptation he faces when away from her is too much for him to resist. The shallow drowned lose less than we - the end of the affair didn't cost him as much as the loss of his marriage. He had to break the mirror sweet (the girl he cheated with, who for a time served as a refection of himself) so that he and his wife could be together. But his wife wears the strangest twist upon her lips - in her face he sees her pain but also her determination to stand up for herself and not accept anymore from him. He hasn't seen this expression on her face before and knows that it means the end this time. He asks her to kiss him good-bye in tears and in desperation before shutting down his feelings completely which is the only way he can cope with his pain. The last thing he wants to do is to kiss her because he can't live without her. Her smile, something he has always loved about her, is the last thing he wants to remember as he slowly disappears from her life. He will take her smile with him as he drowns himself in sorrow. I think their marriage came this close to ending so he wrote this song to remind himself of what he would lose if he succumbs to temptation again. Also it is a message to his wife that he would rather die than hurt her again. He will always remember the strangest twist upon her lips. |

I agree with backlit3 and juiceboy46. This super cool celestial event was happening but she wasn’t sharing his interest. He compares this to the time they had sex and she was left unsatisfied - Robert Smith is just a normal guy afterall! I think the last line “so much for gravity” is meant to be funny. I bought this CD at a thrift store for $3. Who would give this away? This song has been on repeat in my car stereo for days. Also Want, This is a Lie and Bare. Great album! |

Through all the amazing love songs, there were so many ones about hurt and damage. She stood by him through it all. I suppose by singing these songs, the love songs and the ones of regret, he was able to keep their relationship together. He sang repeatedly of his love for her as well as songs that help him remember to be better for her. So even though it sounds like he could be a total jerk sometimes lol, he redeems himself by singing about his deeply felt remorse. Ahh Robert... The lesson for me by listening to Cure music: To find creative ways to express my feelings and share them with my loved ones. |

Or maybe he was enjoying the flattery and didn't think how upsetting this was for his girlfriend. without you - his girlfriend could see what was happening and was enlightening him At first he didn't like being accused and told her to go on, your choice is made, you don't believe me. So she walked away for a short time and it was the worst feeling he had ever had. He realizes that his girlfriend was right about the other girl and goes after his true love to get her back. |
