We all certainly hear what we want (or need?) to hear... I don't think of this as an incest song at all!! When i first heard it, I thought of myself and my brother and our situation with our mother (parents really). What I hear is a a sibling song where one has broken away from an overbearing mother while the other is "stuck" there . The "free" sister (me!) is heart broken and wishes freedom for her brother... and wants him to realize that he needs to leave the manipulative mother situation to realize his potential. In the chorus she talks about being there for him when their own mother wasn't. She goes on to say it's hard to do, but it would ease her own heart to see him break free. And despite the mother's efforts to set the siblings against each other (to be fair, my mom doesn't really do that... just complains about one to the other), they will always have a bond even though they're both a little broken (cold hearts) themselves. Through the rest of the lyrics she reflects about feeling guilty for being free, but not guilty enough to give it up. And also about being there for him when he needs someone to pick up the pieces. As I said, we each hear what we hear. I loved seeing CHVRCHES at ACL 2018. Simply beautiful. |
