She was once with a guy who did all the things she's saying this new guy isn't doing. Basically, she was caught up in a relationship and didn't know how bad she was being treated until she met this new guy who showed her how to have butterflies again. He's lifting her up instead of holding her down like her past relationship. Before, her previous partner always put her down. This was probably done through harsh words and some mental abuse. He is stealing her heart instead of stealing her crown like her past relationship. Here, I feel like she's getting at how her previous partner would again put her down. Most likely, any accomplishments or victories she faced, he found some way to overshadow her or tear her down and make her feel as though her accomplishments didn't matter. She could never fly in her past relationship. She was always put down. The song, to me, shows a past relationship of true mental abuse. In the song, she is saying how this new guy is showing her a level of happiness she forgot existed due to just living every day stuck in this toxic relationship. She even describes it as being a web like she was trapped by this past partner and never knew how to get out. She was hiding in doubt until he brought her out of her chrysalis. This is the stage right before the butterfly emerges from the cocoon. This shows how she's been waiting to emerge as a beautiful and free butterfly. She couldn't ever do that before in her past, but with him she now can. There's a lot of play on words with this song which is why I love it so much. Hope you enjoyed my interpretation. |
