In my opinion, Taylor wrote this song about Natalie (his wife) who is from Georgia. In this song he refers to Natalie as Georgia, and narrates the difficulties early in their relationship, prior to marriage, when he was constantly touring with Hanson, whilst she was still living in Newnan, GA with her family. Throughout the song Taylor states how much she means to him, and acknowledges that he doesn’t want to give up, even if they are going through a rough patch. “I don’t want to let you go, but I don’t want to lose you slowly” Taylor here reflects about how difficult it is to sustain their long distance relationship, but he doesn’t want to break up nor does he want distance to slowly erode what they have between them. “I just want to let you know that it’s only just a little back and forth lately” Taylor states that yes, they are going through a difficult time, but it will pass. The song if filled with references to the hurdles in their relationship: such as distance and Natalie having to “choose” and make compromises (which she eventually did, leaving her hometown and her friends behind, to become Taylor’s wife). In a nutshell, it’s an overview of their early years together and a declaration of love from Taylor, who says that he will be “chasing her the rest of his life”. |

When asked about the meaning behind the sentence “every city has a Chinatown” on an Instagram live session on 09/Feb/19, Charles Cave stated that it means that “Every city is the same. Which is a stupid thing to say […] but then again the man singing this song is a bit stupid”. I believe this song is a about a person who has big dreams, who wants to see the world and experience different cultures, different relationships, different lives, but his/her partner (singing the song) thinks those dreams are silly and not worth pursuing. |
