Steely Dan – What A Shame About Me Lyrics 6 years ago
@[EdgerPoe:30339] Fannie is a guy? No. Just no. It only takes one feminine pronoun to establish that Fannie is not a male, but just to make the point, they are numerous (the feminine pronouns).

@[GeoJoe1000:30338] I don't believe so. The narrator talks about he and Franny being at NYU. The Strand book store is in lower Manhattan near NYU. My Old School refers to Bard College up the Hudson River where Fagan and Becker matriculated but didn't graduate and, I believe, is also where they met.

@[Kyliec88:29571] See my post above. I view this song as an allegorical message from America to us. Haunting all the same. As far as Jackson Browne songs go, I much prefer The Naked Ride Home as one that is haunting.

This songwriting is such a professional job. I love it when on the surface it seems that lyrics are boy-girl relationship stuff but the true meaning is so much more.

To me, the narrator singer is America personified, or more specifically, our country's constitution, and the song is directed towards us. Though this song is over a decade old now, the 'darling of the chic' is timeless. Present or past, it could represent a person for sure, but I think of it as an ideology, maybe religious, maybe not, that we in our twisted thinking try to fit, or rather stuff, into the the container that truly is the core of principles on which this nation was built. Will those principles ever have their time come around again? We'll see.

Donald Fagen – Tomorrow's Girls Lyrics 6 years ago
Though I have not read any Philip K. Dick, nor Eminent Hipsters (I've been planning on getting to that), MCBrownSoes interp seems too well referenced to not have hit the bull's eye. As I see this song, however, I picture the Donald Fagen of today writing it with Tomorrow's Girls being rather than aliens, of an artificial intelligence genesis, created by us to eventually destroy us.

You're not wrong at all. This song is straight up (pardon the pun) about masturbation.

Steely Dan – Lunch With Gina Lyrics 6 years ago
I love it when the lyrics of a tune can be seen overtly as referring to one thing, usually some sort of human relationship set of issues, but covertly has something else as its true subject matter, like is done here. I'm not a drug user, but I don't doubt for a minute that the comments from SpittingLama hold water. Great songwriting!

My take on the third verse is that it is chronologically out of order with the first two and refers to the very start of the forever lunch with Gina. The protagonist is saying to us, "So now that you know what's going on now, let me tell you how it all started."

@[Danfan:29449] Whoops, correction on my last comment. I have the sheet music and I checked. The intro is in 4/4, the return to the intro in the middle of the song is in 9/8 and 6/8. The lyrical sections are 6/8 with a few 3/8 measures thrown in.

@[EN1GMA:29448] For sure, there is one piano fill at the end that has a western feel, that being juxtaposed with the overall definite jazz feel.

Here's my update to the lyrics: "Tobacco they grow in Peking" gets changed to "Tobacco they grow in what's now called Beijing."
