Afraid to swim not because of commitment issues but I think it’s due to misused trust. Maybe he has been played by this person and is afraid to trust because of that. Being alone is easier than the continuous deception and juvenile games.
Maybe the past has situations that does not sit well in his soul and could very well be unexceptionable to the point of no return.
It’s one thing to know and accept the challenges that the future holds understanding the hardship ahead but some actions are nonnegotiable out of respect for another person. Revealing an unwanted character defect.
