Vance Joy – Riptide Lyrics 4 years ago
So I’ve come up with two possible meanings for this song based on what I’ve read Vance Joy has said about it, I explain each lyric in more detail below but her ethey are.

Scared, unsure, insecure young man who is just entering adulthood perhaps

Meets a beautiful exotic girl who makes his friends blush and he is infatuated with

This is where my theory splits

1. They get together, but she experiences something negative (drugs, mental health problems, alcoholic, affair perhaps etcetc) and is taken away to a dark place, he however wants to be there for her to help her, in the end though she fails, could be leaves him for another man, drugs, etc whatever the listener feels

2. She is also interested in another man, she has trouble deciding, but ends up choosing the other man over the main prtganist despite his efforts to make himself more appealing to her

Okay I explain more below and please let me know what you think!

I was scared of dentists and the dark
I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations

- Vance Joy said these were things he was actually scared of, portrays a younger guy who is still nervous and unsure about himself and the world

Oh, all my friends are turning green
You're the magician's assistant in their dreams

- Vance Joy said he met a magicians assistant who was a beautiful exotic lady so I think the character has met a beautiful lady
- friends turning green I believe means they have become young and giddy around this girl, green as they have lost confidence etc and are nervous and unsure with this woman like when they were younger

Oh
Oh and they come unstuck
Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong

The main character and the girl get together but the chorus continually tells us how they come unstuck and she runs down to the riptide which is a chaotic mass of crashing waves so could represent drugs, depression fights etc or in my other theory it could be a decision as to what guys she chooses, and then she goes to a dark side which could be depression, addiction etc or in my other theory the other man

Left hand man means a good man! Vance Joy said his Aunty said she loved her husband who she called her left hand man because he was left handed, the character wants to be her special man

He loves her when she’s singing that song, I believe this represents her good times and why she loves him but she’s gonna sing the words wrong or in other words go down the wrong path like make bad life choices if you take it literally she is on drugs or drunk etc so sings it wrong in my other theory she could be singing a song and is singing it to another man or saying his name in the song

Theres this movie that I think you'll like
This guy decides to quit his job and heads to New York City
This cowboy's running from himself
And she's been living on the highest shelf
Oh

Okay that movie Vance Joy said was apparently midnight cowboy, heaps of stuff happens in this movie but I think he is referring/using it to explain how the two main characters which are two guys work together and have a relationship although I believe it’s a business one. But one gets really sick, the other tries to help him but spoiler alert he ends up dying, so I believe this is an example of what is happening in this song, one character is suffering or having a hard time in life, the other is by their side but they are still dying or sick. On the other hand the main character originally runs to New York to be a prostitute, could refer to the main character giving the chick everything he can etc

Cowboys running from himself....I am a little confused, but I believe it means the male character at the beginning wants to change himself or be better but he can’t change himself, no matter what he does he can’t run from himself, meanwhile I believe highest shelf means he has been trying to help her heaps in their relationship, or infact, they are still not a couple, in which it likely means he is still trying to change himself to appeal to her but can’t run from himself and she is out of his reach or on the highest shelf to

I just wanna, I just wanna know
If you're gonna, if you're gonna stay
I just gotta, I just gotta know
I can't have it, I can't have it any other way
I swear she's destined for the screen
Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you've ever seen, oh

Theory.1 He wants to know if she’s gonna leave him or if they’re gonna break up, he feels he can’t live without her etc or he needs to know because he can’t handle the ups and downs (riptide)

Screen/Michelle phiecer was Vance joys crush so I again believe it’s just reinstating this girl he finds beautiful

Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong
Oh lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong
Oh lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you're singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat 'cause
You're gonna sing the words wrong
I got a lump in my throat because you're gonna sing the words wrong

Last line is like stating she IS going to sing the words wrong: take a wrong turn in life or choose the othe guy

Missy Higgins – The sound of white Lyrics 5 years ago
First of all I just wanna say missy Higgins is my favourite female artist of all time, I think she’s brilliant and this is one of my favourite songs by her ❤️ Okay, so when I first heard it I thought it was about missing someone, which it definitely is, then from the lyrics “down here” made me think it was about someone who had passed away and was “up there” this was confirmed when I saw a you tube comment on one of her live videos which said she told a story about how she wrote it. The you tube comment said she wrote it after looking at a freeze dried rose in her mums house when searching for inspiration, hence the first line, and it was then inspired by her remembering the death of her cousin when she was younger, and how she went to a church not long after he died and was alone but “felt his presence” I believe this is what she is referring to in the bridge “I swear I felt your fingers through my hair”. So that made the song a lot clearer to me that is was definetley about missing someone and in this instance it was someone who had passed away. Finally after reading the you tube comment much later on the song happened to play on my radio while driving to the beach and I think I worked out even more. This MAY BE TRUE I don’t know for fact, but, firstly the line “take me back to the tune before we went away” could be the friendship or literally a song, and she says “if I listen to The Sound of White she then goes on to describe that it brings back memories of them. It could be that The Sound of White is an actual song!! I’ve read she has a musical family, so I’m guessing, that maybe she wrote a song called The Sound of White, with her cousin before he passed, or they played a cover of a song of that name, and when she listens to that song she is reminded of him..... that is what I think the meaning and story of this song is
