Typically you Guys have this song wrong. This song is just a complete metaphor, based upon the seven years previous to Anthony writing it, which were unstable painful and chaos filled times for him, fuelle at first by his addiction to alcohol then drugs. Anthony is a fairly sensitive Guy who is hurt by the darker aspects of the World, who can expres them good with poetry. The "without you is something I could never do" aspect is (according to Anthony) based on his Mother and his relationship with her, presumably he rebelled/fought and stressed against her but realized he loved her too deeply for that to really mean a whole lot, and he loved her (like in the end we all do with our Mother no matter what transpures). A similar theme is also apparently reflected in later Circa Survive lyrics in his relationship with his Wife (not to equate Mother and Wife, but I feel like Anthony is someone who develops around the people close to him). Anyways he's one of the best lyricists to ever grace the post-hardcore/alt rock scene. |

Grimes really hit the ball out of the park with this song. Anyway, I think it's just about the general vulnerability of being with someone from her perspective. Maye "break bread with an infidel and plunge into the dark" means that as a feminist, she's still going into relationships with Men, maybe even Men whose ideals differ from hers, but I could be misinterpreting. The rest of the lyrics tend to hint towards being forced to accept reality. It can hit hard and feel like landing on a cold hard surface, when it used to seem both less and more intimidating from a child's perspective. Either way, she will be remembered for this song, it's a classic. |
