This song is about a breakdown - in a relationship, a friendship, communication and/or empathy. It comes when the person who the song is sung to needs this the most. They've almost certainly reached some sort of mental crisis in their life and need someone urgently but the person/people they need just aren't there. They were once but not any longer. There's a haunting, empty desperation that comes from the simple questions the song continually asks and its repetitively beautiful melody and tune. They need this person/these people so very, very badly and, for whatever reason, deliberate or circumstantial, they are simply just not there. The person the song is sung to has no choice - they now need to move on and try to cope alone |
