This is symbolism at its best. Every Symbol has a meaning. Figure out the meaning and decode the message. This song like most Zeppelin songs it is filled with symbolic references to History, The Bible Ot and NT, Celtic Gods and Mythology Lady = Church /Christianity / False Religion Piper = Wisdom Truth Jesus.......... Perhaps a reference to the new song only the chosen will know Rv:14:3 Whispering Wind = Devil the inventor of all lies. May Queen = is a reference to the Celtic Goddess of Spring, Virginity and Fertility like Guinevere or the Maid Marion later converted to the Virgin Mary when they converted to Christianity. Other references include the sign on the wall IE: "the writing on the wall" OT biblical reference to the fall of Babylon. The fall of the harlot (false religion) Queen of Babylon RV:18 Rings of smoke through the Trees is a reference to ancient Celtic and druid religious gatherings in which the whole community would gather in the forest by the ring of fire and smoke clouds in the shape of rings where created to invite their ancestors and the Gods to join in the Tell of the Tuthe De Danna. Looking to the West is reference to the Celtic belief that he after life IE Heaven was in the West and his spirit is crying to be one with the great Spirit IE God. there are dozens of Celtic poems and references to this looking to the West. The last few verses are kind of self explanatory. the shadow IE our deeds the Soul our good intentions our words our proclaimed faith and good intentions....It is easier to talk about being good and desiring to do good than to actually do good. think of James 2:14 In the end this song is about the battle between good and evil in both society and ourselves. It ends with The tune will come to you at last. ................................the song of the chosen ie a good life of deeds not just words.
