In the 60s, lots of songwriters made references to gypsies, this isn't Van's only one. Hendrix: Band of Gypsies; Stevie Nix obviously, Sonny and Cher; etc. What I find interesting is his references to turning on the radio and the electric light, which goes back to some blues numbers in the days when such things were kind of new - like Billy Holiday and some of the early Delta and Chicago blues recordings. |
