I don't know if this song is meant to be taken literally. It's not about a boy going on adventures. It's about a person who lacks it and is seeking it in others. It's like a prose poem I wrote. "A boy will never seek adventure in safe harbors. A man will call them home after a life of rough and stormy seas." I perceive it as a young man who finds settling down with someone to be boring and mundane but also because they may fear the commitment. Being lost in so many places but seeking love in so many faces... |

The real message is in the final bridge where at the end he repeats “They’ll take away your heart and soul”. He’s referring to sensationalist media back then and the fear mongering that is now the standard format for television today. Basically saying living a life in constant fear is not a life at all. |

This song is about the push and pull of an abusive relationship (physical or emotional, all of the above). the "gap" being referred to in the song is the disassociation one begins to feel after repeated abuse and becoming fed up. But in this song, it talks about how there is something that brings the person back into the relationship, being too weak to walk away and stay away from it. The final line refers to the idea that the only way this situation will end is if the person finally loses control and attacks back. |
