Really liked this song when I first heard it in 1969, but later thought different about it when I learned more of the Bible. Sure we are “going up to the Spirit in the sky when we die”, as the Bible say’s, “for it is appointed once for man to die, then the judgment” Hebrews 9:27. As we live a short life, then “we fly away.”Psalm 90:10, “for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ” Romans 14:10. He’s is right; “Prepare yourself you know it's a must, Gotta have a friend in Jesus”. So, how does one “prepare”? By believing the Gospel of the good news that “Christ did bare our sins on his own body on the tree (cross), that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:” 1 Peter 2:24. This is the most power packed scripture in the whole Bible, telling of what Christ “did” for us and its “effect”. But there would be no need for his great sacrifice of himself if we had, “Never been a sinner I never sinned” as he express’s! And never would we have “a friend in Jesus”, without knowing why he had to die, for sure! “Wherefore. as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12. For, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him (God) a liar” 1 John 1:10, For this sin is what caused Christ to dare to die for us; “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commended (showed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet (still) sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:7,8. So, how do we “have a friend in Jesus”? Jesus said; “You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you” John 15:14. What did he command? “this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his (God’s) Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.” 1 John 3:23. |
