One of my favorites of the whole group. The author is in love, but it's not reciprocal at the start of the song. That breaks his heart, he's sad, but he really loves the person he is directing this song to, and just the thought of her brightens his day. Summer is the happiness and lightning is the sadness that unreciprocated love brings, and he's feeling both at the same time. What I'd like to point out is the instrumental break in the middle of the song. It's energetic and, personally, it cheers me up. After that, he does not sing any more sad lyrics, like he does before the first two choruses. And keep in mind that after this, we've got Mr. Blue Sky. I think this means that after striving so much for this love, he's finally with her, and that fills him with joy. Finally the rain and the lightning stops to reveal the blue sky. |

This is one of my favorite songs of the album. The way I see it, the author can't get over past mistakes he did, and has a low self-esteem. The buildings represent these mistakes he did, and they have eyes because they look at him. He thinks that he can't become a better person, and he says to himself: "it doesn't matter which way you turn, but you gotta keep trying 'cause you'll never learn". He tries to get away, walk away from this city to become a better person, but in the end, he finds himself where he started, as stated by the repetition of the first verses. |
