Of Mice & Men – Second and Sebring Lyrics 7 years ago
although saying 'only' baby scars is an oxymoron because baby scars would have long lasting deep effects on someone. This is highlighting how deep these problems run of not being able to engage emotionally with love as someone who has suffered.

Of Mice & Men – Second and Sebring Lyrics 7 years ago
Others have explained what the song is about (his mother dying and him saying he'll make her proud.

What is also interesting in this song is the way it is sung. There is a mismatch in the lyrics to the tempo and the mood of the singing, this suggests he is struggling to express what hes saying because he's grappling with his emotions and the sensitivity of the content. And also it's an attempt to get the message of love to people such as emotionally guarded men/women without them having to identify as a sensitive person to sympathize with it.

[This time I'll, make you

Proud to see me over, come on daylight
Proud of, who you raised ]

These lyrics are actually written where they fall onto the next verse, highlighting the mismatch.

[Come back so I can say thank you for this
Home cooked meals and a place to rest
My troubled head when you're away
I've passed the test, I've earned an A
Not just in school, but in life
You'll always be right by my side
To help me show, hope to all
That are lost and sick in this dying world
I'll use the love you left behind
I'll change their mind, I'll change their mind]

This verse has a variety of tempos and moods in the way it is sung to highlight the struggle in emotion/expression. The last half of this verse speaks about how he wants to use her love to help people that are 'lost in this sick and dying world' which reinforces that he wants to use this song(/his music) to spread the message of love even though it sounds aggressive.

[I hope, I hope you smile
When you look down on me
I hope you smile]

This verse is sung completely differently to how it reads which emphasizes the point. Out of context it sounds satisfyingly aggressive, but as you read it, it sounds very sensitive.

[This is not what it is, only baby scars
I need your love like a boy needs his mother's side ]

These verses verbally reinforce what i'm describing. In the first line he saying it's nothing and then in the second line he says he needs her love.

Hope this sheds light on just how much of an awesome song this is!

Cheers,

Parkway Drive – Carrion Lyrics 7 years ago
Amazing song...

I think the song is about a woman he knew who has died, all these references to 'her eyes' is his memory of this dead persons eyes coming into his mind and every time it happens it takes him away and hes lost in sad memories. 'Carrion' is a play on words where hes telling himself to carry on but also a reference to the decaying memory of this woman.

[Dead eyes speaking volumes
But our lips refuse move
Could this ever be the last time?
The final time that we see this through?]

This is an ambiguous reference to the fact it is a dead persons eyes hes speaking about, but also that hes staring into the eyes of someone in the room who is also grieving over the same person at the same time, and they silently wonder if they will ever get over the death because they keep grieving again and again.

[Give me the strength to return, return the breath you've stolen
Give me the means to resist (resist)
Her heart I've broken again
Reflection built upon sorrow
We're walking the darkest roads
Within chests carved with regret]

This speaks about how he becomes breathless when he remembers her and he is looking for strength. Hes suggesting on the third line that hes broken her heart and he regrets it, reinforced by the mention of regret at the end of the verse. [we're walking the darkest roads] seems like a reference to there being two people grieving together.

Additionally [her heart I've broken again] is written ambiguously because it doesn't follow on from the previous line, this is so that you can also interpret it as 'her heart...' being an unfinished thought suggesting that she had a good heart and it is causing him to suffer more. Then he continues to say hes 'broken again' ie. hes cracked again and is grieving more heavily.

[We've been running blind
Now we're falling through the cracks
We're left running
We are running blind
Now we're falling
Falling through the cracks
Back to the world of the dead]

This refers to how life is now hollow for the two people and that they have lost direction and feel like they are 'falling' in life and will be until they die. Also alluding to the risk of suicide.

[Her shining eyes (her shining eyes)
Her shining eyes mark out(our) return
Back to the world of the dead]

this is a reference to his belief that the eyes he remembers are a true vision of her dead self looking at him and that he will see her again when he dies. 'Shining eyes' suggesting she is either crying or she shines like someone pure.

[My love I left
My heart I left
With my promise to return
A promise to return]

This is acknowledging she is someone he loved and suggesting that he promised to literally return to her whilst she was alive but he didn't get chance to, which may be why he has regrets. Or alternatively that he has a broken heart and hes waiting to die to join her.

The lyrics are written ambiguously enough to interpret in at least two distinctive ways. Alternatively there is the way other people have interpreted it where he is struggling to approach someone he has just met because he is getting over the heartbreak of his previous partner. Who has similar eyes to this new woman, or that this new woman has had a similar heartbreak and is struggling to approach him as well. And then more interpretations are available... the sign of a very good piece of writing!!

I don't know what compelled me to write this essay, but i hope it helps bring more meaning to this song for people!

Cheers,

Cameron
