When I listen to this, I think of some girls I knew when I was younger. They had a hard life and you could not foresee them having long term positive relationships. They worked, partied, did drugs and were tough and had emotional walls. You knew that bad things had happened to them and that they were medicating past injuries. They approached relationships like they were a zero sum game. Fun, support, self-destruction, self-soothing and sometimes cohabitation. Too much hassle or demands and it would be over and god forbid if they ever fall in love. They did not know how to have a real relationship, to be honest, open and vulnerable. They could break a boy, they would need guidance to be true, to know where to begin. These verses I can feel them scrambling for something beyond their usual patter, con, manipulation because they have decided this person actually means something to them.
