@[aisha894:28681] An incredibly wild assumption by someone who clearly lacks much education. He may be on business, military rotation or with the diplomatic service or even the security services. Think about the themes of Chris de Burgh’s songs in general. Service, duty - separation, love and missing someone. Perhaps in this story the couple fall in love in the brief time that they are together. He must leave and intends to return. She promises to wait but in her heart - she feels that the love is in the moment. Not something that can be recaptured. She realises the truth of the situation and gives reassurance in the final moments so that the memory will be tender and close. Despite her words, he sees the truth in her eyes. As he leaves Paris, there is nothing for him to look forward to - but instead cling to the memory of the farewell. It is sad because both want the moment to last longer and the days to continue, but life pulls them apart just as it does in reality. We also don’t know the time frame but I imagine a time long before internet, sms, WhatsApp and other shit. It is afterall a story and this song was written in the mid 70’s. |
