I have loved this song since before I can remember, it was always really nice and kind of upbeat. Then I heard the MTV Unplugged version (also by aha) and it was heartbreakingly sad sounding. It also might be the use of it in Deadpool 2 and a surprisingly sad scene that make me feel this way, but I think this song is about dying. Or a dying individual embracing their death without fear. I will give you a breakdown: I don't think they begin with an actual conversation with another person, the conversation is with death. The singer is clearly succumbing to whatever is killing them but it is unclear when this death is coming. The death isn't coming as they expect, it is shying away from them. But the singer knows that the death is near and they will be coming for each other. In the chorus the singer is basically telling death they are prepared, they know that their time is limited to at the most a couple of days In the second verse the singer is letting us know that there is still unresolved feelings, however, they are slowly accepting their fate and the last line of this verse means that is inevitable The chours again So from what I know about those that are dying often begin to feel a calm come over them as deaths embrace advances, so the worries leaving the singer could allude to this feeling. Again the singer reaffirms that they are aware of their fate even though the death is lingering The chours repeats but it changes slightly, it's no longer a day or two, the time frame has changed, death is coming The final bits of chorus get a little bet more ethereal feeling, I believe this is the fade into death and as the the last line states "take on me" and ends, I believe that death has finally welcomed the singer to the end. ANYWAY, super morbid right. Hope I didn't ruin this for anyone lol. |
