As the years pass and the older I become, the more I appreciate this song.
I like the loyalty that Mick showed toward his friend, "I did my very best to write" and cheering him up with thoughts of all that they were going to do once his friend got out only to come to the realization later that none of it will come to be because "years have passed and times have changed" and Mick is not the same person he once was. But, he regrets none of the times that he did spend with his friend and only looks back with great fondness prompting him to wish his friend well. It's bittersweet though because as he's toasting his friend, he's also saying goodbye. A farewell to a chapter in his life that has passed and cannot be recaptured. |

@[hacker00:38261] Actually, he was describing his girlfriend's mother. Someone he loathed because the woman was full of self pity. |

@[Shatter:30266] Yeah. At first glance it seems like it's pro money. "All that money wants" but he's actually using the word want not as in "desire" but rather as "in lacking". All that money leaves you still in the state of lacking. |

This is an ode to an old school chum. Reminiscing about their friendship and all the fun times they had together. But it's also about growing up and perhaps growing apart. And hence, it's quite bittersweet. Because it's an homage but also a goodbye. |

@[LadyLilith:29719] Yeah. I think that's it. Marianne's 1986 version is more appropriate. She even said that song should be sung by a woman in her 50's rather than a girl of 17. |

@[strummer_2007:29635] I agree. He's reminiscing but with the passage of time there's the temptation and futility of relieving the past. So, in the end he's wishing his friend all the best but it's sort of a goodbye but also a tribute. Bittersweet. |

@[dmdmn2:29634] Yeah. Even though Richards wrote it, I think Mick's thinking of Marianne when he's singing it. At least that's what I like to think (whether it's true or not). lol. |

@[rdubois85:28601] Yeah. It's about a one night stand. This song elevates it by humanizing participants of it. It's not callous or malicious. Course he could just be feeding her a line to get what he wants (sex!) but I choose to think he's being a bit more sincere than that. |
