| The 'Black Man Ray' referred to is an imagined evangelical preacher who is spouting out the certainty of God/Jesus/Heaven as if it is a fact that can't be argued and that people can't be happy unless they believe in Jesus. The lyrics point out not only how dangerous that point of view can be but also state that God and an afterlife are by no means sure to exist and that you don't have to believe in any religion to lead a happy and morally decent life. Furthermore the song implies that we shouldn't be shy about saying so and not be cowed by the religious fanatics out there who say that heir way is the only way. | |
