It’s a beautiful song. It has a certain meaning to me. I’ve played this numerous times when people I love are dying. I’ve instructed several love ones that if I am lying in a comatose state to play this song for me so I can move on. Beautiful song sad and beautiful just like death. |

Michael Stipe is Gay. He co wrote this song. Everyone that is gay and eventually come out of the closet should be able to relate to this some. It's a simple song about that coming to terms with someone whom you feel that first attraction to when you are discovering your sexuality. (This can also be relatable to young straight people too). It reminds me of that connection to that first special someone. That first time you are emotionally (and possibly physically) naked with that person. This sone is about skinnydipping and that's the perfect metaphor. Swinmmng naked by the moonlight. Being naked to that person and being who you really are with another person for the first time. "ightswimming deserves a quiet night I'm not sure all these people understand It's not like years ago The fear of getting caught Of recklessness and water They cannot see me naked" Of course thee are huge moments in a persons young life and as the song says These Things they go away; Replaced by every day. This sound mean the person eventually moves on; or that after the fact, they are embarrassed and move away from you. That leads us to the last verse. Once you've had that special moment and possibly years later you both move on. But here is my take on the song. The other person decides they are not gay and get married. The singer move on too. However years later the singer is remembering and maybe going down for a swin in the same place with the picture in the car. That leads us into the last verse. You, I thought I knew you You I cannot judge You, I thought you knew me This one laughing quietly underneath my breath Nightswimming |
