I think Penguinwithaspork is correct about the line "Unhappiness where's when I was young". Which should actually be "And happiness was when I was young". After reading his comment and re-listening, I think that is correct. And it makes much more sense. As others have mentioned, it's a reflection on when she was young and life was simple and overall happier. As to the "my father liked me" and suggestions of incest, I think that is way off. Remember Dolores idealized her father and they got on quite well. I think she means he really liked her, not just loved her because he was her Dad. But truly enjoyed her company, doing things with her and conversing with her, etc. BTW, I visited her grave when we were in Ireland this past May (2018). |

| I think the line is actually "And stay in bed ON TIL Sunday". Many Irish use ON when talking about staying in bed. For example, "I'll be lying on" means you plan to sleep late (or as in the US, we say "sleeping in"). Also there is a bit of a gap between the ON and the Til, when Dolores sings this line. BTW, I visited her grave when we were in Ireland this past May (2018). | |
