Martika herself has kind of limited this song's possible meanings when she said it was written about a friend battling a drug habit. This has overshadowed many other interesting things she alludes to in "Toy Soldiers": the futility of the battles we wage in our lives; the fact that at the end of our lives, emptiness is the only thing that remains. |

@[CAMeye:34874] she didn't write it, it was offered to her by Italian songwriters Angelo Valsiglio, Pietro Cremonesi and Federico Cavalli. She did say that it reflected some events of her life at the time and the way she interprets the song is absolutely moving and convincing. |

@[ladynausea:28483] Many of their songs are cryptic and ambiguous, I believe they did so on purpose. Even "Truly Madly Deeply" is not the straightforward love song it is believed to be, Darren Hayes explained the story behind it in 2015 and its lyrics were actually inspired by him longing for his hometown Brisbane and his family while recording new songs in Sydney.
It is amazing how many different meanings one can attach to a song like "Tears of Pearls. I heard it first when I was a teenager and saw it not as a story involving a couple... but rather, three people. For me, there is a third person describing another (a girl? a friend of his?) who has been hurt by love (the third person being the one singing the lyrics, i.e. Darren's "character"). He wants to offer solace to the girl ("Well I could be the tired joker / Pour my heart to get you in / Sacrifice my happiness just so I could win").
Apparently, he has been in secretly in love with her for a long while. Now that she has been hurt by another person, he wants to pick up the pieces and no longer feels like locking away his emotions from the rest of the world. He wishes to express those feelings which he has kept hidden for so long, and wants her to do the same. |

I was struck too by its sheer beauty when I heard it for the first time, as a teenager. The metaphors used, the expressions, the melodies, the vocal delivery, the ambiguous situation being described: all of it coming together to deliver a song that was a real pearl, a hidden gem on their debut album. |
