Chris Bell – I Am The Cosmos Lyrics 7 years ago
The truth of Bell’s sexuality is not known. He had a longtime girlfriend that left him, but who knows what the story was behind that. It doesn’t matter. This is a song of longing and realization.

Bell was into Christianity and was a spiritual seeker. But it didn’t stop his depression or his wanting to be able to connect with someone. He needed someone to love. He tried to take a spiritual overview of it, telling himself basically that he was a part of everything, that he had oneness with the cosmos, with life itself, but that didn’t help him with the pain of his longing.

He could tell himself he was the cosmos, he was the wind, he was part of this as-great-as-all existence oneness, and that his human desires and needs were insignificant, but it didn’t take away that pain.

Big Star – The Ballad Of El Goodo Lyrics 7 years ago
Aside from whatever Chilton mean with it, this song can apply to several things. Vietnam, disillusionment, depression. It is the depression idea that connects with me the most.

"Years ago my heart was set to live but I've been fighting hard against unbelievable odds" and there are lots of people who tell a depressed person how they can overcome it, how they should act, what they should do. Almost every line can relate to depression and the ongoing fight.

Hold on
I'll fall if I don't fight
etc
