Wild Beasts – Two Dancers (I) Lyrics 3 years ago
In many Wild Beasts songs they seem very aware of the evil that lives among some men. At the same time there's a lot of play in their lyrics - I suspect this song is a man trying to justify saying "I feel as if I've been where you have been" to a woman who has given everything of herself for her children who also don't actually understand "where she has been". I think the song is somewhat sardonic. I don't think the man has been where she has been and in Two Dancers part II I think he sees her snap back at him and their relationship shatter.

José González – Heartbeats Lyrics 3 years ago
"One night to be confused
One night to speed up truth"

The first two lines suggest that the singer and a romantic interest are dropping their guards for just one night, in the next two lines it's revealed that they agreed not to get attached

"We had a promise made
Four hands and then away"

They discover that they are on the same wavelength (in this case I think by "under influence" they mean with infatuation):

"Both under influence
We had divine sense
To know what to say
Mind is a razor blade"

The mind can be very sharp (clever) but also sharp (dangerous/manipulative).

"To call for hands of above, to lean on
Wouldn't be good enough for me, no"

Despite agreeing on "four hands and then away" the singer couldn't find strength from even the heavens to resist this other person.

"One night of magic rush
The start, a simple touch
One night to push and scream
And then relief"

This is pretty straightforward, it starts with a one-night stand.

"Ten days of perfect tunes
The colours red and blue
We had a promise made
We were in love"

Within a little over a week they rush into something way deeper than they should. They are seeing the world through colored glasses.

"To call for hands of above, to lean on
Wouldn't be good enough for me, oh"

But the singer can't help it. They are head over heals and no greater power can stop that.

"And you
You knew the hand of the devil"

While hands from above couldn't turn the singer from their romantic interest, the other person had hands from below (the hand of the devil) which might be able to because...

"And you
Kept us awake with wolves' teeth
Sharing different heartbeats in one night"

The romantic interest wasn't being faithful, sharing the singer's heartbeat and another secret lover's in the same night. "Kept us awake with wolves' teeth" a bit of a sexual play reference mixed with the metaphor of a wolf in sheep's skin. The romantic interest was separately manipulating both lovers.

"To call for hands of above, to lean on
Wouldn't be good enough for me"

The chorus has a new meaning now - even the heavens above can't support the singer through this heartbreak.

Mother Mother – Verbatim Lyrics 4 years ago
Contrary to what people are saying, I think a few other Mother Mother songs (think Wrecking Ball for example) reinforce certain destructive male stereotypes and people seem to ignore the verse in this song about the singer in fact embodying those stereotypes (I am the rooster in the morning, cock of the day, boxer in the briefs etc).

If anything I think the singer is misleading the listener ("for the love of f*** for the sake of Pete did you ever really think you'd love a guy like me?" Followed by his confession of actually being hyper masculine) and I wonder if he's actually calling attention to how easy it is to just quote verbatim whatever is transiently desirable at the time to win people over.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 4 years ago
- Hymnal = Song of praise to god or a god
- Pack = group of wolves, predators
- Following the pack = idiom for doing what's popular
- swallowed in their coats = consumed by what they're wearing
- scarves of red = first result on wikipedia: red scarves worn by communist youth, in China emblematic of blood of revolutionary martyrs
- tied 'round their throats = connotations of choking, strangling, nooses
- their little heads = they are probably children (indirectly, naive)
- the snow = it's winter, winter brings hard times
- to keep their little heads from falling in the snow = to protect them from dying or being killed in hard times
- And I turned 'round = I looked back, I had a moment of doubt
- fall = fall from grace, or be killed
- and turn the white snow red = spilling blood, being killed
- As strawberries in the summertime = a memory of of a different kind of red, from a "better" time.

Literal interpretation: Very bundled up kids are walking through the snow, the singer sees another fall and somehow (despite being bundled and falling onto soft snow) they bleed all over the snow. He compares it to something pleasant and the song for no reason is considered a song of praise (a hymnal)

OR

Symbolic interpretation: The singer is following along with a bunch of children or naive people who are trapped in communism out of fear of being killed or dying in hard times. The singer has a moment of doubt, and in that moment sees another dying for abandoning the cause. This martyrdom reminds the singer of better days when red was just the color of strawberries and they were free. The song is hymnal and praising Michael for this martyrdom and the memory it brought - that there was another way of living.

@[MercurialIrish:28392] "to keep their little heads from falling in the snow" that's a pretty dark image to try to interpret - the band literally feeds listeners an image of decapitated children here. Further, you say a boy fell and skinned his knee? How is that possible when they're so bundled up? And walking through the snow??? "Turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime" sounds like a lot of blood.

Check out the Wikipedia page for "Red Scarf". They were often worn by children in communist era countries, such as the USSR. I feel like "Michael" represents someone who is killed and the rest of them are just kids following what they're told to do, with little awareness of how dangerous any of it is (hence the subtle things that sound threatening... "SWALLOWED in their coats" and "tied round their THROATS")
