This is one of my favorite Cars songs. It's such a great combination of weird and rocking, with the aggressive synth and Elliot's guitar carrying us through. The oblique lyrics keep me interested and curious. "Homogenize... Decentralize..."--what does that mean in this context, if anything? And what is the context, anyway? Could be drugs but given the album is called Candy-O and has the famous Vargas drawing of the girl on the car, I'd say it's about a woman. |

| @[Jerrybear:28383] This is close to what I had always thought about this song, though, as I tend toward darker interpretations, for many years I thought the "flowers" were actually the decomposing bodies of the Guatemalans, glowing bright reds and yellows because of bioluminescence, with Amanita perhaps being the responsible decay bacteria. (I found out much later that Amanita is indeed a flower.) Whatever the meaning, the song is beautiful and melancholic, and probably my favorite REM song. | |
