The song is about loneliness obviously. Not a break up song, but about just having no one in the first place:

"And a love so distant and obscure, remains the cure"

I believe this is referring to paying for sex to temporarily satiate/"cure" his loneliness.

And yeah, never needing anyone when you're young is probably because when you're young you figure you'll figure things out as you get older, you have all the time in the world. Its easier to be alone as a kid. But then when you're older it starts to become more important, and you don't want to be alone.

@[JSBach:46691] only the melody in between the verses. The vocal melody of the verse and chorus are his, and most of the song is original melody.

@[imacleigh:35505] I don't know if Elliott was self disparaging with his own music, or viewed other musician's better than himself. To me I got the impression he became SO solo, because he knew that him+anyone else waters him down. I've never heard him drool over other artist's either, he'll say "I think Elvis Costello is good". I

Sometimes when he plays a tricky solo, live, you see him grin almost like he';s pleased with himself. He's very modest, but at the end of the day, yough many many hours of footage, I've never heard him once talk negatively about his own skill or ability. I think he seemed confident in that regard, if not sometimes embarrassed at the extreme candidness of some songs.

Elliott on songwriting: "I think it's pretty easy,.. if you just relax and quit thinking about what you think other people want to hear. If you can find things you personally like. And if you like it, there must be something good about it. Right?"

I think it's

"all smiles and celebration", not false in celebration, which makes the next line make more sense. If you can change your like you'd be all smiles.

Wild speculation here, but I recently heard Elliott discuss writing Between the Bars while watching Xena warrior princess on mute. Pushing 9 can mean he's pushing volume to 9/10 on his amp while watching "pretty pictures with the sound turned down", television on mute perhaps.

But it also sounds like ninety. As in pushing 90 mph, through the country side, cows and cotton.
This song is honestly quite difficult to decipher. The verses seem unrelated. This whole song could just be written off of feeling, mood, and atmosphere. It seems to be a very in the moment piece.

Looking at the moon maybe gives him reprieve from the crazy life of a rock star in LA that he wasn't quite built for. That's the happy moment that's just for now, cos when he looks back at the city, like a planet, it pulls Elliott back into it's inescapable orbit. Back down to reality.

some or all of this could be related to the song, or not. I really think this was more about the music/melody/sound and style rather than trying to express a specific meaning. Elliott wrote much of his music like that. Subtle pointers to what he's saying, but without saying anything specific, or cohesive with the rest of the same, but it just sounds good because of word selection, imagery, and flow. Who knows, wish we knew more.

@[charcoalsketch:35503] I think it's ninety, as in 90 mph, as he's talking about driving in the very next line. Also, the imagery of the stars, city, cows and cotton puts the setting outdoors, to me anyway.

On second thought, maybe the song just does actually say pushing 9, talking about a tv show, and the volume being at 9/10 on either his amp or the television, while the other is muted.. He once talked about writing Between the Bars while watching Xena Warrior Princess with the sound off. So it's all very confusing, but could be tied into that haha.

@[ShawnWilliam:28381] He was playing this song at least since 1996. He wasn't having serious problems with record companies till Figure 8 I believe. I agree with the guy you quoted. No Elliott wasn't a selfish songwriter, but he writes a lot about himself. He often uses third person to write about himself I feel. This song he uses a mix of first and third person. I feel like most of what he wrote was partially about himself.

A lot of his songs also had several meanings. He was the kind of lyricist who often wrote what sounded good and captured a certain mood or feeling. A lot of his songs don't seem to be written with a specific topic in mind and end up being a mish mash of meanings, whatever's on his mind. He does have songs with very specific meanings, but I don't feel this is one. I think it's just an expression of feeling down and defeated, and he's ready to give up.

No Elliott didn't ALWAYS write about depression and suicide, but he does relatively often and I think this is one of those songs.

As for your conspiracies about Lennon and Tu Pac etc... I really disgree with you there, but that's a whole other argument. Anyway, cheers!

One of the saddest, sweetest songs ever. I love it. I think he was playing this one for years. I remember footage from 96 he played this. Anyway, I just think it's about messing everything up, being at the end of his rope. Everything is tragic and bad. He's giving up and giving in to all his mistakes and missteps and is just completely defeated.

My favourite line is "I've been thinking of the things that I missed...Situations that I passed up for this". It's a dreadfully sad lyrics. It reminds me of somneone thinking about all the beautiful and wonderful things in life that so many people get to experience, but instead he threw all that away for things like drugs. I myself squandered my entire twenties on drugs, and this lyric always chokes me up. I feel like I destroyed my social skills. I'm clean now, but can't seem to enjoy things or meet people. I feel like I gave up so many wonderful things for a stupid drug.

We got one life... That's what this song makes me realize. You can't take back your mistakes. It's just a sad song. Anyway I'm rambling.

I agree with bits and pieces from a few comments. I think it's about wanting to be alone and being uncomfortable around others, but also there seems to be some sort of relation to fear of intimacy. Liking someone, but not being able to make a move "had a second alone, with a chance let past", regretting all the things he should have done or said to let a girl know how he feels.
