The SWEEPING GESTURE creates a fuss. The reference of a chatty bird in both songs supports what you suggested about a girl a partner maybe it was a pet name for her. Many many years of cherishing this song with rotating feelings of what it meant. A lost loved one or returning from war and so on. I recently watched "Working class boy" a brutally honest auto biography of Jimmy Barnes,the frontman of COLD CHISEL for the unaware. He speaks of the struggles he went through as a young kid, in the dark dirty shithole town he grew up in,in Scotland with all the domestic violence he would often refer to that as war. Near the end of the documentary he sings the song with daughter Mahalia Barnes and it seemed so clear that the song is about his fear of returning to his childhood hometown. However bandmmate Steve Prestwich wrote the song long before any of the band knew the details of his childhood. But as Molly Meldrum said "Do yourself a favour" and aatch this Documentary or even buy the book. Rock on. |
