The song describes a break-up scene. He drives up the hill to tell her he wants to end it. She asks questions as "why?" and maybe he doesn't have a good reason for it, he would prefer it if she would just stop asking questions and tell him to go away or break his nose. He feels that even a "fuck off" would be too kind. "Ask anyone, they'll tell you that It's these times that it tends To start to breaking up, to start to fall apart Hold on to your heart" If you ask anyone who's ever been in his shoes, driving up that hill, he is about to ruin everything between them and break her heart but you have to hold on to your heart, do what it tells you to do. He dares to say that they're equally as bleak, he feels guilty and he is scared he is making the wrong decision. But he is curious for more, perhaps they've been together for too long and he feels the need to explore something else, even though he doesn't know where that leads... Curiosity becomes a heavy load, too heavy to hold. |

The "house" is a metaphor, it stands for everything that has happened between two people in a relationship. When a relationship ends you can either keep its memories or "burn it down". In a frantic moment he decides to burn it down, start a war, see it all disappear without a trace. He is moving on. Burning down the "house" means to turn his back and to let go of everything that happened and that hurt them. He invites her to watch - "Stand here beside my baby, watch the orange glow" and she wonders why because to burn it down also means to forget all the good things they had together. There is, though, a shred of hope - he is willing to burn it down unless she tells him something worth fighting for. In the end he asks her to meet him by the bridge, the lane, someplace new, so he can see her face again and start from scratch. |

Such a powerful song. It's about anxiety. It speaks to me in a personal way, putting into words what's so hard do explain. ("Trouble that can't be named A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing") Because of my personal experience, to me the song's about how I felt when I was with a person who felt like home ("You are Home, home, where I wanted to go"), someone I have loved very deeply ("And nothing else compares) but with whom things never felt right. It was a very stressful and toxic relationship. It made me feel terribly anxious and confused, unable to understand if it was my fault things were the way they were ("am I A part of the cure Or am I part of the disease"). |

I think the song is about a new relationship that is beginning ("Can you remind me the building you live in"). He wants it to grow - "Meet me in the stairwell" - could be a metaphor for an invitation to move some steps up in the relationship. "Nobody else will be there then" means there will be just them two, either because he longs to be alone with her ("I need you alone"), because no one else knows about them, or even because he wants her to know she doesn't have to worry about others girls or third parties, he only wants her. The second part suggests he is in a very fragile state ("My faith is sick and my skin is thin as ever") or has been through some rough times - "Hey baby, where were you back then? / When I needed your hand" - this could mean that he needs her and that the wished he could have met her earlier, when he was going through his difficuld times. Anyway, it's an exciting new relationship - he is willing to go to her house even though it's cold and they never want to say goodbye whenever they are together. |

This song is about being addicted to someone that it's bad for you and you know it ("Oh, but your love is such a swamp"). But when you are with that person she always feels like a hundred times herself - a hundred times the reason you love her. Or you feel a hundred times more how much you love her. It's such a strong feeling that you wish everybody could see whats so great about that person. He can't be open to it anymore ("I won't be vacant anymore")... But when he's drunk (seeing double) he's in trouble because he seeks for her... |

For me this is a very sad song. I imagine a couple sitting on an edge of a cliff with their feet at the horizon They are happy and in love and they think their love will go far, they throw stones as if it were their hearts to see how far they can go. But their relationship ended unexpectedly. It is gone and she can't believe it because she still remembers and feels like that moment on the cliff's edge (It can't be gone, we're still right here) I've got the feeling they were together long (we stood so long we fell) but still haven't had heard it all/ seen it all / felt it all they thought they would because they had hope their relationship to be so much more. (it took so long can't say we heard it all) (it took so long can't say we heard it all) (it took so long can't say we felt it all) They thought their happy moments would make their relationship last forever (tear a moment from the days that carry us on forever / (bright pyramids at night that carry us on forever) But time changes things... (this push and pull is the force of a wave of time in the heat of a night, we would cry, you are not mine) And I think that, even though their relationship ended, they are still in love with each other because, sadly, that can't change.... (Love's like a pantheon It carries on forever) |
